An update on the situation of Belarusian anarchist prisoners

Mikalai Dziadok(4,5 years) is finishing his 3rd month in a solitary cell after having refused to work on Saturdays. Work is obligatory in Belarusian penal colonies, but is regulated by the Labour Code, which prescribes that a person shouldn’t work more than 40 hours a week. Mikalai was forced to work more on Saturdays, but refused to do so. He was punished with 6 months of solitary confinement on June 1st. During this period he is deprived of all dates, phone calls and food supply from the outside.

Ihar Alinevich (8 years) served 14 days in a punishment cell for refusing to clean the inner yard of the colony. This work is done only by certain prisoners who relate to the downcasts*. Thus, the prison administration tries to make him the downcast as well. In Belarusian prisons the downcasts do all the dirty work, eat and work in the distance, they are objects of humiliation and often used for sex by other prisoners. The pressure can be the result of the fact that Ihar’s mother started publishing his prison diaries. Earlier he refused to sign a petition for mercy.

Aliaksandr Frantskevich (3 years) was put in a punishment cell for refusing to clean the cell, which is the work for the downcasts. Before that he was visited by a top-rank policemen, who had organised the arrests of anarchists in autumn 2010. He tried to intimidate Aliaksandr and hinted at the necessity to sign the petition for mercy. Moreover, other prisoners get punished for having contacts with Aliaksandr.

Jauhen Vas’kovish (7 years) doesn’t receive any letters from people other than his parents. The censor only shows him empty envelopes. He informed that he had been also asked to sign the petition for mercy, but refused to do so.

Artsiom Prakapenka (7 years) conducts a hunger strike since August 8th and is now in a punishment cell. Artsiom was forced to work in the first shift, thus he cannot make a special vegetarian lunch for himself, as he had done before, when he worked in the second shift. He also refused to sigh the petition for pardon and receives letters only from parents.

Pavel Syramolatau (7 years) signed the petition for pardon in June, but was not released until now.

* There is a strict hierarchy in post-soviet prisons, according to which several “casts” are distinguished. Every cast has a certain scope of rights and duties. The hierarchy is now not so strict as before, but still the prison authority has to put up with it. Sometimes it uses the hierarchy in it’s own interests.

“Blatnye” – professional criminals, part of ‘mafia’ or organised groups outside of prison, are on top of the hierarchy. They are in charge of illegal supply of food, tea, cigarettes and cell phones in prison. They guarantee the ‘prison law’ and judge conflicts between other prisoners. Usually don’t work.

“Muzhiki” – ordinary prisoners, the most numerous group. The work, don’t fight for the power in prison, don’t collaborate with the prison administration.

“Kozly” (trusties, ‘activists’) – prisoners, openly collaborating with the prison authority, working for the administration (librarians, different managers, etc.). It is frowned on to get in touch with this cast.

“Opuschennye” (the downcasts) – gays, people that are used for sex (even if they are not gay), prisoners, sentenced for paedophilia, rapists, and people that get in touch with the previously mentioned. It is enough to take something from the downcast, to touch him or to eat with him at one table to be considered a downcast as well. They don’t have any rights and usually do the dirty work – washing toilets, etc. They always live separated from other prisoners.

The prison authority tried to break the ‘laws’ and mix all kinds of prisoners, but it always resulted in mass disorders and suicide attempts. For any prisoner it is better to die or get punished than to be labelled a downcast by others and serve the rest of the sentence in humiliation. It is almost impossible to change your cast.

1–10 August 2012: Contra Info call for propaganda actions against repression

We make a call out for ten days of propaganda actions, in as many places
as possible, aiming to promote struggles which are more or less known but
also entirely unknown to many people. Individuals and/or groups who wish
to join in these ten days will choose the thematic and the means according
to their own criteria and dynamics, for the strengthening of international
and reciprocal solidarity amongst the oppressed.

We are mainly suggesting taking to the streets, painting slogans and
dropping banners in solidarity with cases that we believe are important to
be heard. We have done this in Athens in the past months, and you must
have done it, too, in several occasions. But we need to go a step further
and carry out such actions simultaneously at a European level and,
hopefully, beyond. Some of us are in the UK, Germany, France, Spain,
Serbia, Portugal, Greece, but also in America, therefore we can make out
of a simple action something beautiful. For those that feel all alone in
places where they live, it might seem harder… but all you need is a sheet,
paint or spray, plus a nice location. Wherever you are, call your mates
and spread the word.

From the 1st to the 10th of August, we can place banners, post posters and
fliers, write slogans on the walls, or carry out any other action that
will encourage the diffusion of the anarchist/libertarian discourse beyond
state-language borders. So, we look forward to receiving and disseminating
photographic and/or written material from comrades’ actions, wherever they
might be.

In early August, we coordinate our efforts and lift our head up high
against repression and the society of prisons, against the States and
their borders, against the Capital and its profits. We can be many; we can
be everywhere.

Freedom for basak sahin duman

(source: http://freebasak.blogsport.de/2012/06/11/schwedische-petition/)

there are lots of german written information, but only few in english describing the case, so here is a part from a petition, which describes the background of the inprisonment of basaj sahin duman. even

she is not related to anarchism as far as we could find information, she is a prisoner and in danger of being delivered to the barbarian turkish prison system because of her social engagement and emancipative politics.

solidarity and freedom for basak sahin duman!

a3yo

Basak Sahin Duman, who has got residence permit in Germany and one of the ex-student leaders, arrested in Croatia, and wanted to be extradited to Turkey, a regime of repression and torture. She is going to spent long years in prison because of her activities at school if she would be extradited!

On 29 May 2012, Basak Sahin Duman has been arrested at the Zagreb airport when travelling from Germany to Croatia by airplane. The reason of her arrest is the existence of an international arrest warrant issued by Turkey. It is a well known fact that Turkish state continuously tortures prisoners, whose numbers counted as about 13 thousand, and this fact has been underlined on numerous times by the international human rights organisations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, and by the EU Commission.

We strongly condemn the detention by Croatia of someone who has been living in Germany since 2006 and has got a right to remain in the country, and attempts to extradite her to Turkey. In Turkey, where there is no freedom of expression, thought and press, everyone who struggles for democracy can be attacked and imprisoned. In Turkey, where there is 100 journalists and writers, 2000 children and over 500 students, numerous trade unionists and thousands of Kurdish activists are in prison, attending a demonstration, writing an article, demanding freedom of thought and democratic rights can be a reason for long term imprisonment by the state. And Basak Sahin Duman was given imprisonment sentence because of using her democratic rights.

When she was studying at Istanbul University Medical Faculty, Basak Sahin Duman, born in 1979 in Ankara, suffered from police violence and put in prison because of shouting her demand for democratic university in protest against the Kemal Alemdaroglu, University Rector, during opening ceremony for 2002-2003 education year. This is just one example of treatments the students get when they demand “free, democratic, scientific and autonomous university”.

On 7 December 2004, Basak Sahin Duman was arrested together with many people during a student demonstration organised against the government’s attempt to pass a law through the parliament in Ankara. She was released after spending 3 months in prison. However the court case continued until 2010.

The case heard at the Ankara 11th Heavy Penalty Court had ended on 22 April 2010 with sentence of 224 years imprisonment in total for dozens of people, Basak Sahin Duman was given 7 years 6 months. The court case opened against this lawlessness at European Court of Human Rights on 25 October 2011 with 71667/11 file number still continues.
Now the Croatia, a candidate country for EU, becomes partner of such anti-democratic practices of the Turkish State by detaining Basak Sahin Duman and willing to extradite her to Turkey. And the German State, where she has been living since 2006, still keeps its silence on the situation.

Her application for a political asylum in order to stop the extradition has been denied by the Croatian police under the pretext that Croatia does not recognise right to asylum at all –which represents another law crime. Yet it has not been officially confirmed whether her application for asylum has reached to the court. There are many people who have already applied for asylum in France, Germany and Switzerland because of the same court case of which Basak Sahin Duman got punishment too.

STOP HOMO- AND TRANSPHOBIA! SOLIDARITY WITH LBGTs* IN UKRAINE AND EVERYWHERE!

Lautstarker Protest in Bonn: Free Pussy Riot!

(Quelle: http://de.indymedia.org/2012/06/331519.shtml)
