Stop the states attempt for intimidation of extraparliamentary activists!

the following statement was delivered to several officials from belarus state at the 1st of october:

Stop the states attempt for intimidation of extraparliamentary activists!

At the 3rd of september the world witnessed an extensive wave of repression by the belarussian state against activists from an undogmatic and ecological background in Minsk, which extended later to other cities, and which is still going on. Seven young activists were facing this repression, one of them was a participant in the Trade to Climate Caravan from Geneva to Copenhagen in December 2009.

All of them had been arrested for more than three days, which is legally the maximum duration, and for many days no officials did give any information about the location where they are detained. The charges they were accused for had been changed many times, leading to a lot of confusion about their future fate and perspectives.

We don´t understand the state´s strategy, if the elections which will be held in Belarus in December 2010 are one of the motives behind the intimidation of democratically legal but political unwanted activism in the country. This is visible in concrete campaigns, like the one against newly constructed power plants, as well as in the general behaviour of the government towards its critics.

Some of the displaced persons from the 3rd of september are still in the central prison of Minsk, some were released, but then imprisoned again. We heard of beatings and other maltreatement during the interrogations by the police, which made the Helsinki Commitee already start to pose official complainings. Again and again activists in Minsk were requested to show up for `interviews` with the police and when they followed the request,
they dissappeared for some days.

This is also what happened on September 25th to another activist, who was the second participant from Belarus in the Trade to Climate Caravan in 2009. After the `interview` with the police he didn`t came back home. The relatives called the police to ask what happened and received the short comment that he is suspected of ?hooliganism?. The arrest was then prolonged for another three days, so that he will be arrested for at least six
days.

We do hope that this form of repression and violence against extraparliamentary activists will end immediately and call for worldwide attention and solidarity! We demand to stop the state`s attempt to intimidate democratical opposition and extraparliamentary activism!
